Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Thursday explained why President Uhuru Kenyatta should not contemplate of
appointing the Opposition supremo Raila Odinga to any state position following the famous handshake.
According to Sakaja, the former Premier will be in a better position to serve Kenyans without any official title or special office.
Penning his opinion on The Star newspaper, the legislator divulged:
“I personally don’t think that any appointment for Raila is necessary as there is work to be done in Kenya than elsewhere.
Raila Odinga’s energy and focus would serve Kenyans better at home, working with other leaders to build lasting cohesion and spearhead actual reconciliation,” Sakaja said amid reports that President Kenyatta is lobbying African leaders for the appointment of Raila as Africa’s special envoy.
The former TNA chairman exclaimed that Raila does not need any position for personal comfort or legitimacy.
“He is already Raila Odinga. He only needs to be present and rally his supporters towards a more united country where everyone hs a fair chance.
“He should be facilitated and equipped to do this, ” he noted.
Additionally, Sakaja highlighted that he doesn’t understand why anyone would want to spoil a historic opportunity to unite the country for personal position and title.
“Which is why a political appointment — which can be misconstrued as an endorsement for future leadership — is ill-advised. Every move and activity will be regarded as posturing for 2022 and this will alienate many of us who are clear about our 2022 preferences,” he commented.
Reports by some local dailies have indicated that there is a possibility of Mr Odinga being named an African Union Special Envoy as part of his truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
