Ruth Kamande,while on trial for murdering her boyfriend, confessed to stabbing him 22 times using a kitchen knife.
The 2016 winner of the Miss Lang’ata Prison beauty pageant told Justice Jessie Lessit she stabbed Farid Mohammed on September 20, 2015 in self-defence.
Kamande, 24, told the court Mohammed tried to kill her after she discovered he was HIV-positive.
“Farid told me that he would rather kill me and himself than have his status exposed..l stabbed him severally using a kitchen knife, which fell on my chest from his hands after I overpowered him after putting my two thumbs in his eyes to save my life,” Kamande confessed in court as quoted by The Star.
She further narrated that they had a heated argument with Farid prior to the incident ,where she accused him of trying to infect her with HIV & AIDS.
“Your honour, it pained me to know that the person who I loved and trusted so much was to ruin my life by infecting me with HIV & AIDS,” she said.
She also revealed that the deceased had insisted on having unprotected sex with her the previous night and on the following day,she had to be rushed to Metropolitan Hospital and later KNH by investigating officers, where she was given post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV infection.
Kamande added that Mohammed snatched the treatment card from her as she was trying to pack her belongings in the bedroom.He attacked her from behind, leading to the grisly incident.
Kamande admitted to stabbing Mohammed while in the tussle, but out of fear, panic and shock to save her own life.
She however refuted stabbing herself to cover up.
The accused further told the court that their relationship was rocky especially after she discovered her boyfriend had a love affair with two ladies whom she identified as Scholar and Esther.
“After demanding an explanation over the two love letters I found in his bedroom he became angry, took the two letters and tore them into pieces trying to make me believe that the two letters meant nothing to him,” added Kamande.
The court was informed that among the exhibits retrieved at the scene of murder were a love letters sent to the deceased from one of his girlfriends in the US, a damaged mobile phone handset and the murder weapon.
Interestingly,Ruth Kamande sat for the 2017 KCSE examination at the Langata prison and scored an impressive A-.
She will be sentenced on July 19.
