An official with the American State Department told The Daily Nation that Opposition leader has not been barred from visiting the US contrary to claims by State House director of Communications Dennis Itumbi on social media.
“It is our understanding that nothing prevents Raila Odinga from getting on a plane and flying to the United States. He is welcome to visit the United States,” said the official who spoke to the Daily Nation on Thursday, October 12.
His response comes after Jubilee leaders called on the US and the UK to deny Mr Odinga visas to travel to their countries on claims that he (Raila) intends to throw Kenya into anarchy should be be allowed to fly out.
These remarks were made by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang ,Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter and Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago on Wednesday, October 11.
“It is time the countries Raila plans to visit take stern action against him and deny him visas. Allowing him visas means they support his heinous activities. We cannot seat back and watch Raila cause chaos in the country,”Mandago said.
Their calls to the USA and UK came after Raila Odinga withdrew his candidature from the October 26 repeat Presidentilal election.
The former Prime minister is currently in the UK.He yesterday gave a lecture at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs,an independent policy institute.
