Uhuru’s Decision to Compensate Poll Violence Victims

Details have emerged that elaborate plans by the Kenyan Government to compensate victims of violence during the electioneering period, are underway.

Speaking during a visit to Kisumu, Raila revealed to the crowd that compensating the victims was part of the deal he made with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Many of our people were killed and maimed following the elections last year.

“We agreed with President Kenyatta that all these among other injustices must be addressed and compensation made to the affected families,” he stated.

The former Prime Minister also revealed that he reached an agreement with the President that suspects facing charges in connection with his January 30 ‘oath’ be freed and charges dropped.

Raila further told the crowd that he and President Kenyatta were aiming at burying old enmities and fostering unity among all the communities in the country.

This was Raila’s first visit to Kisumu , one of the areas hit with the 2017 post-election violence, since his meeting with Uhuru.

While addressing the crowd, Raila also clarified that the talks were between ‘two’ presidents and not between NASA and Jubilee.

The opposition leader was cheered by the huge crowd that had come out to welcome him after he declared he would work with President Kenyatta.

Anti-government protests erupted in some parts of the county following the 2017 General Election and the repeat presidential poll. Dozens of people were killed and others injured as police moved to quell the protests.
