Uhuru’s Government responds to ruling on Miguna’s deportation

The government, which is led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, has responded to a court ruling revoking the deportation of self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna.

In a press statement of Thursday,Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government PS Karanja Kibicho maintained that the deportation of Miguna was procedural and done in accordance with the law.

Kibicho argued that the order by High Court Judge Luka Kimaru to have Miguna’s passport surrendered to the court was not in the best interest of the country.

“In as much the government respects the court decision, the government still holds its earlier stated view that the deportation of Mr Miguna Miguna was procedural and done in accordance with the law,” read the statement in part.

“We believe that the ruling by Justice Luka Kimaru which further directs the Director Immigration Services to surrender Mr Miguna’s illegally acquired Kenyan passport to the court within seven days is not in the best interest of the country.”

The PS further revealed that the government intends to ‘revisit’ the issue by appealing the decision.

“Going forward, the government’s legal team handling the matter is currently reviewing the High Court ruling and will shortly be appealing this court decision,” said Kibicho.

Justice Kimaru on Thursday declared the deportation of lawyer Miguna Miguna to Canada illegal and moreso null and void.

Judge Kimaru ordered that Miguna’s Kenyan passport be surrendered to the court in seven days.
