Safaricom Changes Name

Leading telecommunications company Safaricom is now trading as a public limited company and has issued a public notice on change of name from Safaricom Limited to Safaricom PLC( Private Limited Company).

“The approval to change the name was granted by the company’s shareholders during the Annual General meeting held on 15th September 2017,” Company secretary Kathryne Maundu said on Wednesday.

The giant telco further announced that the Certificate of Change of Name issued by the Registrar of Companies had taken effect on January 31, 2018.

The change was effected in compliance with Section 53 of the Companies Act, 2015 which says that a company that is both a limited company and public company may only be registered with a name that ends with the words “public limited company” or the abbreviation “plc”.

The company’s twitter handle has been changed from Safaricom Limited @SafaricomLTD to Safaricom Public Limited Company @SafaricomPLC.

Recently, the company launched a new music streaming service dubbed ‘Songa’ which offers a variety of music to customers at a fee.
