Thursday’s unpredecented meeting between Co-Nasa Principal Raila Odinga and retired President Daniel Moi continues to elicit mixed reactions from Kenyans and politicians.Rift Valley legislators allied to Deputy President William Ruto expressed their fury over the meeting which they claim was meant to sabotage DP’s 2022 presidential bid.
The politicians, led by Nakuru Jubilee Party Secretary-General Peter Mtumishi Cheruiyot, termed the meeting as ‘inconsequential’, noting it won’t hurt DP Ruto’s chances of succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta in the next election.
“As Jubilee, we are solidly behind Ruto and we will vote for him overwhelmingly,” Cheruiyot said as quoted by Daily Nation.
Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama said it was fruitless for politicians to try to wrestle the vote-rich Rift Valley region from the DP as it was fully behind him.
“It is voters who will decide. We have already decided that it is William Ruto who we will back for the presidency in 2022. The rest are sideshows,” Hon.Arama said.
According to a statement from ODM, Raila visited to wish Moi quick recovery following his recent hospitalisation.
“The visit followed the recent hospitalisation of the retired president in Israel. The two leaders also discussed the state of the nation. The former president was strong and in high spirits,” read part of the statement.
Some political analysts, however, observe that the meeting was a major boost for Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, who is ex-president’s son, in his 2022 presidential ambition.
