Revealed: How Captain Barbara Saved the SAX Plane from Burning despite Crash

Reports have emerged how captain Barbara Wangeci Kamau of the ill-fated FlySax plane tried to save lives of her passengers by avoiding possible explosion of the aircraft in case there would be any survivors after crash.

Having lost contact with the air traffic controllers at Wilson Airport, Ms Kamau, a four star captain, could not fly higher due to the presence of Etihad and Emirates planes which use the same route.

Now fying blind without guidance, Standard journalist Jepkorir Lagat says Barbara noticed a hill which she tried to avoid.

“By the time she figured the hill on her own, she made a quick turn to avoid the collision and she was about successful when the left wing hit the hill.”Lagat disclosed.

“In that confusion, Barbara spilled fuel off the plane and because of that, the plane did not explode,” She added.

Barbara Misled by Air Controller

Air controllers at Wilson believe Captain Barbara was misled by flight controllers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

The mistake, known in aviation circles as Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), happens when an airworthy plane, under pilot control, crashes as a result of poor communication from a control tower.

According to the Daily Nation,Wangeci , 28, contacted the control tower and was advised to land at JKIA using the Utawala side.

However, she was not familiar with the route , and so the air controller at JKIA promised to help her navigate the Aberdare Forest and onwards towards JKIA, where she was to land on runway 24.

Problems arose when fog above Aberdares forest blinded her and suddenly lost contact with the control tower. She did not realize she was flying towards an outcrop.

All odds, therefore, were stacked against Ms Wangeci, and her fate and that of her passengers were sealed by the fact that the plane she was flying does not have a moving map display to give her the actual location and warn her of any impending outcrops.

This led to the plane hitting the hill, causing the demise of all the 10 people who boarded the aircraft.

May their Souls Rest in Eternal Peace…
