Opposition leader Raila Odinga was on Wednesday feted in London with the Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (BEFFTA) award for global leadership in recognition for his struggle for better governance.
Speaking during his acceptance speech,Mr Odinga said that the world has continued to laud the ceasefire agreement he made with President Uhuru Kenyatta that saw tranquility return to the country.
He also noted that the African Union praised the pact as unique and could be used as a yardstick to help resolve conflicts in other African countries.
“Most African countries have disputes that last the life of parliament. We have perpetual conflicts in these countries. We decided that we did not want to be prompted by any foreigner to tell us how to resolve our issues.”Raila said as quoted by The Standard.
“We decided that we are going we swallow our pride for the sake of unity for the people of Kenya. This award is not for Odinga, it’s for the people of Kenya.”He added.
BEFFTA Award honors the best personalities in entertainment, showbiz sports and leadership in the black and ethnic communities in the UK, Africa, USA,Canada,Caribbean and globally.
The awards,which was founded by Dr Pauline Long, is unique since it rewards outstanding achievements and contributions from Caribbeans,Africans and Asians in the above mentioned fields.
According to Dr Pauline ,the awards is aimed at inspiring black and ethnic personalities worldwide to achieve at the highest levels and provide a networking platform for industry personalities.
The famous handshake between the Head of State and Mr Odinga has recently experienced challenges with allies of the two leader launching scathing attacks at each other.
Notably,Deputy President William Ruto has renewed his onslaught at the former Prime Minister,describing his as an an impediment to democracy.
In a swift rejoinder,Mr Odinga’s lieutenants have accused the DP for holding the country hostage with his 2022 presidential ambitions,labeling him as Kenya’s enemy number one.
