Raila Odinga opens up on secession debate

Nationa Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga has for the first time given his view on talks about the secession debate.

The former Prime Minister says does not support whatsoever the formation of the so called People’s Republic of Kenya but thinks those pushing that debate have legitimate concerns.

The controversial debate was ignited by one of Mr Odinga’s strategist, Mr David Ndii, just after the annulment of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win September 1st.

Mr Odinga said supporters of the separatist agenda have “a justified cause” due to what he termed as “successive ethnic discrimination” since Kenya got its independence.

During an interview with The Financial Times when he visited London last week, the opposition leader maintained that his desire is to see Kenya united and one.

“We believe in a united Kenya. We do not support secession, but you have seen the disintegration of countries in eastern Europe. This debate about self-determination is gaining currency as a result of mis-governance,” Mr Odinga told Financial Times as quoted by Daily Nation.

“The debate about self-determination is gaining currency. When people become desperate they resort to desperate measures,” Raila added.

The Nasa leader observed the secession talk has covered more ground since the current political impasse and years of “ethnic marginalization”.

Odinga yesterday called upon his supporters on a mother of all demonstrations during election day.
