Prosecute IEBC offenders,We are Prepared to Conduct the Presidential Elections:Chebukati Says

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Wafula Chebukati has welcomed the  Supreme court’s ruling to nullify the Presidential election results he announced on August 11th.

He said the commission will make internal changes to its personnel and prosecute staff liable to election malpractices.

He however insisted he will not resign following the Supreme Court’s decision.

“No, I am not resigning as of now. I listened to the Supreme Court Judges and didn’t hear anything about the chairman,” he told the press on Friday.

“Somebody has to take responsibility for the judgement. We invite the DPP to investigate any of our staff who might have been involved in any scam,” he was quoted by The Star.

Chebukati also defended commissioners, pleading that they only took office recently.

“The new commissioners took office only seven months ago and did not make changes to the secretariat,” he said.

“IEBC will have a sitting and changes shall be outlines most probably tomorrow afternoon,” Chebukati added.

Chebukati asked the Supreme Court to deliver the full judgement as soon as possible for them to prepare for the presidential election within the stipulated 60 days.

NASA has called for the disbandment of the current IEBC saying they cannot be trusted to conduct fresh polls.

The seven-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Maraga, ordered IEBC to conduct fresh presidential elections in 60 days.
