President Uhuru Kenyatta’s announcement on Friday that he would not be attending the 31st African Union Summit in Mauritania,left Kenyans with many unanswered questions.
In a statement issued to newsrooms,State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu explained that the Head of State would not be attending the summit due to urgent state matters.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta has been held back by urgent state matters and will not attend the African Union Summit in Nouakchott, Mauritania.”Read the statement in part.
“The President has deployed Dr. Amb. Monica Juma, CS for Foreign Office KE, to lead Kenya’s delegation to the summit this weekend,” concluded the statement.
Following the statement,which was tweeted on State House Twitter handle and later deleted, Kenyans were curious to know why President Kenyatta opted for the CS instead of his Principal Assistant-the DP.
Many Kenyans online held the opinion that President Uhuru should have sent his deputy to represent him at the event if he was unable to attend.
“Very unfortunate Uhuru is taking our country in the wrong direction. The DP is supposed to represent the president in such duties.We will see at end of the tunnel. Bad days ahead for the country.”One Mahir observed.
One Erick Cheruiyot wrote;
“CS instead of his principal assistant DP, Uhuru wake up now.”
Replying to the tweet by State House,another Kenyan by the name Kibet Koech said:
“Hahaha which state matters. I thought Ruto is his deputy.”
Citing previous foreign engagements, Kenyans noted that DP Ruto represented Uhuru in all last year’s foreign events which he was unable to, with East African Community (EAC) Head of States Summit held in May 2017 being an example.
