Gov’t takes disciplinary action against Judge Odunga

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has revealed that the government has began seeking disciplinary action against Justice George Odunga over the ruling that convicted him of contempt of court charges.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Security on Tuesday,Matiang’i said that the Government had directed the Attorney General to launch a complaint over the conduct of Judge Odunga with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

“We have gone to the Court of Appeal on the matter and even sought the Attorney General”s direction on how the judicial officers conducted themselves,” the CS said as quoted by The Star.

The Interior CS complained that he was convicted of contempt of court charges while unheard.

He further told the committee that Odunga’s orders were issued at a time when he was attending the pass-out ceremony at the GSU headquarters in Embakasi.

“When the judge wanted us to appear in court in person, we were attending a GSU pass-out parade and did not even have our phones. We were condemned unheard and on the basis of lies,” Matiang’i stated.

“I have not been served with any court order. I am not aware that there have been attempts to serve me, or any of these officers, with court orders.”He added.

Noting his actions were guided by the law, as their responsibility is to implement it, the Minister asked Parliament to help the Executive uphold these laws.

Other than Judge Odunga, the government has marked four other judges it does not like and wants them either fired or transferred because of their recent decisions.

The judges are accused of fighting the executive in cahoots with the Opposition and civil society.
