DP Ruto says happy for IEBC to meet NASA demands

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto said on Tuesday there would be no problem if the IEBC agrees to meet a raft of demands made by the NASA ahead of a repeat poll on October 26.

The Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win on September 1st after NASA leader Raila Odinga petitioned his re-election.

Mr Odinga dramatically withdrew from poll race, saying the IEBC had failed to meet a raft of recommendations his coalition raised to guarantee fairness. He then called for daily demos to force the reforms.

In a rather rare gesture, the DP said he doesn’t have problems with NASA demands as long as they accept elections to take place on 26th  this month.

“If they (the election board) chose to have a discussion with our competitors with a view to firing this member of staff or firing that member of that staff or changing a supplier … so long as the elections are there, we will participate,” Ruto said as quoted by Citizen Digital.

Despite Raila’s call for ‘no reforms no election’,the electoral body has gone ahead with the preparations while maintaining Odinga’s name on the ballot.

Mr Ruto has been accusing Odinga of trying to spark chaos through the demos in order initiate negotiations for a coalition government.

“It is a manufactured situation to achieve a political end and that is what we must resist,” he said.

President Uhuru has turned down calls for a seat with the former PM and has instead maintained to only meet him on the ballot.
