Details of Uhuru’s Secret Phone Call with DCI on the NYS Suspects

Details have emerged that it took President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal initiative to speed-up the arrest and prosecution of the suspects of the National Youth Service(NYS) scandal.

According to The Star Newspaper, Uhuru piled pressure on the Director of Criminal Investigations(DCI) to act swiftly to apprehend suspects in the misappropriation of public coffers.

The Star’s highly placed sources also intimated that Head of State has been receiving regular briefs on the progress of the probe from the DCI through Public Service head Joseph Kinyua.

On Sunday afternoon, however, President Kenyatta reportedly telephoned DCI George Kinoti and categorically told him that he would not go to bed until all people implicated in the saga were arrested and locked up.

Uhuru’s orders caught the police chiefs off-guard. They had to revise their initial plan of nabbing the suspects the following day (Monday).

Mr Kinoti and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had met on Friday for a second time at the DCI headquarters to analyse the evidence collected by investigating officers, with a view of drawing up charges for prosecution.

They had agreed to arrest the suspects starting Monday but President Uhuru’s call threw them back to the drawing board.

The DCI then summoned senior police commanders for an impromptu meeting at his office along Kiambu Road at around 5pm, with the sole agenda being how they would immediately proceed with the arrests.

With the Head of State breathing down his neck, Kinoti and his contingent of law-enforcers swung into action. By 1am nearly half of the suspects were apprehended.

The operation was concluded by 3am when all suspects were in police custody.

The President is expected to speak on the fight against graft during his Madaraka Day address in Meru on June 1st.
