Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Wednesday gave the strongest hint that he was ready to quit his job if his demands are not met.
In a press statement from the Bomas of Kenyan, Chebukati confirmed that the IEBC commissioners were sharply divided and even called upon those adversely mentioned (He did not say by whom) to have bungled the August 8th election, to step aside.
Among the conditions he made to guarantee his stay in office were;
-Presidential candidates to convene for a meeting he will chair, stop intimidating his staff and let him do his job.
– Staff adversely mentioned as having engineered poll irregularities to step aside and let a seven-man project team he set up to do its job.
Mr Chebukati looked like a man under siege after disclosing that his efforts to make decisions at the IEBC have been stifled by a majority of commissioners whom he termed as partisan.
“I have made several attempts to make crucial changes, but all my motions have been defeated by a majority of the commissioners. Under such conditions, it is difficult to guarantee free, fair and credible elections, “he said.
The chairman sank the heart of many Kenyans by reiterating ex-Commissioner Akombe’s sentiment of not being able to hold a credible election on October 26th.
“I am convinced that without critical changes in the key secretariat staff, we may not have a free, fair, and credible election. I ask the staff who have been adversely mentioned to step aside and allow the project team to function without interference.”
At one time, on the fifth page of his statement, it looked like it was a done deal:The troubled 56-year old was on his way out.
Then, in the last two paragraphs of the speech that had all the tones of a man giving up, though with a tinge of “I can still do it” attitude, Mr Chebukati turned the tide: He was not going anywhere, after all.
Whether he will opt out or not will remain to be seen in the coming days.
