The African Union(AU) Observer Group has issued a preliminary statement on the fresh presidential election that took place on October 26th.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the observers ,led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, noted that there was an improvement in the way IEBC handled the repeat poll and maintained that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election is legitimate.

The observer group however condemned cases of post-election chaos witnessed in a few parts of the country and intimidation of the judiciary. The mission also called on those aggrieved to seek redress in courts.
On the question of legitimacy, Mbeki said, “It’s an issue of a political decision that hasn’t been discussed. It’s a mathematical issue but not political.”
The AU sent mission also noticed the low voter turnout in most parts of the country following NASA’s dramatic withdrawal from poll race.
They promised to extensively speak on the issues in their final report.

They concluded by calling for national dialogue after the exercise and advised the police to exercise restrain in quelling protests.
The group were present in 195 polling stations out of the gazetted 40,083.
